I've had just about enought of this garbage...
...And so had the rest of the world. By the 27th century man's ability to pollute had become his greatest achievement. The world had turned into a festering wasteland, replete with the garbage of man and his pollution belching cities. Enter Professor Ivan Idea, the most brilliant scientist of his age (47 at the time).
Ivan Idea: biogeneticist specializing in gene splicing and recombanent DNA. It was Professor Idea's discovery of the gestalt microbe known as Biomass which spared man the ignominious fate of drowning in his own refuse. Biomass could live on garbage. It was also the microbe known as Biomass, with the help of a nuclear war, which would pervert the designs of petty men, bringing an end to civilization as it had been known through the centuries.
The Biomass formed into huge living entities known as Very Large Creatures or VLCs. These VLCs ate so much garbage that they eventually depleted the world's resources of garbage and toxic chemicals in the war ravaged and devastated areas of the planet. It took years, but, incredibly, the VCLs restored the wilderness. As food became more scarce, they turned to the only remaining source left on the planet: the surviving cities of man.
At first, the human race was caught by surprise. Quickly, however, man relearned his use of the weapons of war from bygone eras. Any weapon from the lowly dagger to the most sophisticated Laser Cannon was pressed into service. Almost overnight, man prepared to defend himself and his way of life from this benevolent but destructive new life form. Common became the cry from the watchtowers which protected man's last bastions of civilization.
"I've got a VLC in quadrant A-5 and its comin' fast. I'm going to Condition Red!"
